1. Describe situations when doctrinal concepts have helped you clarify the decisions you make as a teacher.

  • the goal is for the student to be his/her own person
  • connecting the Ten Commandments and Golden Rule to discipline and social interactions
  • conscience - when things aren't going well, draw internal strength the Lord has implanted
  • in 8th grade, many choices about appropriateness have to be made every day. Understanding the developmental level of the students informs what direction discussions take - a balance of meeting curiosities and desire for fairness with preserving some level of innocence left in them
  • which novels to read - which films to show - what historical periods, etc - what form of social interaction at school

2. How might the school system support you in becoming even more successful at doing this?

  • make more time for me and other faculty to work on this - maybe our faculty could feel like we were contributing to NCE rather than just receiving it
  • more emphasis on skills and application rather than just knowlege - more on how and why needed in curriculum
  • skills-based religion program
  • a non skills-based music program would be really benign
  • do they know how to pray?
  • "The primary thing that makes you New Church/Christian/good is obeying the Ten Commandments" should be said to every child
  • keep working on the curriculum and get it published in some form
  • more doctrinal study time (perhaps with choices of focus)
